So by saying the sphere has no flying speed; You are saying it will follow the ground level. So of it travels off the edge of the path, it will use movement to go down and then back up?

It wont hover at the current height while traveling over the lower area?

Only got the PHB242 RAW to go on, so here's my understanding:
1) "...5' diameter sphere...appears in an unoccupied space..." ==> can manifest on the ground but not in mid-air
2) "...can move the sphere up to 30'..." ==> doesn't cite any non-ground movement
3) "...When you move the sphere...can direct it over barriers up to 5' tall and jump it across pits up to 10' wide..." ==> explicitly cannot Fly as only limited jump necessary

From this, I am saying Flaming Sphere:
a) cannot fly
b) will therefore follow the ground (in the same way that a humanoid does without jumping or climbing)
c) will fall over an edge if a humanoid would also fall over the same edge

To put it another way, I think of it as "Has Speed 30', can't Dash, but can vertical jump 5' or horizontal jump 10'." A humanoid cannot walk up from the bottom of the pipe onto the ledge and therefore the FS cannot roll up to the ledge. It cannot hover.

How far down is it if you go over the edge of the walk way?

I'm thinking it could go down, travel along beside/under us, then back up, if the distances or enough.

A human couldn't walk it and would have to Climb vertically more than 5' so it is beyond the ability of the FS.

So if Woody would cast the sphere 60 feet in the air it would fall to the ground?

If he could, it would, but as he can't, it won't.See #1, five posts above this one.

Crawford tweeted it would drop, I can find the link.

Could it travel across the fungal mass to the otherside, then jump back over?

Sure, it is subject to gravity.
But it has to be cast on an unoccupied square.
That means on a surface one can stand on.

That would not be what the developers say, link to his tweet, in previous post.

But if that is what you are ruling for your game, I live by what the DM says.

In that case IMO they need to errata the PHB.
Range (p202) cites target of fireball as "point in space".
p242 cites target of Flaming Sphere "unoccupied space".
I take this in the sense of a space that can normally be occupied (by a humanoid).
The latter is also consistent with the the various Conjure spells ("unoccupied square").

The only difference I can see is that FS does not say "that you can see" which the conjure spells do.
My resistance was not whether one can drop a FS of a foe, but rather dropping summoned creatures on them. Without this discussion I would never have picked up that difference.

OK, I will reverse myself. FS can be cast in space. Thanks.

My PC (HD?) makes clunking noises so I'm going to rebuild it. Had the MoBo for a while but put off doing it.
I may be posting only from phone for a while so no graphics or maps..

Might just be a fan, but that is a big might.

SSDs are so affordable here now. And super fast.
