OK, this will be an ongoing story wrote from the DM's perspective (ME) of my running of a 2e game using my home made realm, Kervasis Kaloom)..

By my house rules for Cha creation, players make up 2 pcs. The first starts with a 5k xp pool to build the Cha with, but starts game play at 0xp (so he in essence starts out higher level, but has to earn it all back).. Their back up pc starts at 2500xp for the build, but again, starts game play with 0xp.. Every 2 levels gained by the Pri pc, the B/U gains 1 (if not adventuring at the same time). If only 1 player shows up, we no game. If 2 or 3 players show up, they get to play both their pri AND back up at the same time (so both gain XP). If 4 or more players show up, those who's back ups were there from a prior session need to 'fade into the back round). For Stat generation, Player selects option 1 or 2.
Option 1 is Roll 4d6 (No rerolls of any 1s), drop lowest. Make 12 stats, and pick any block of 6 stats in order (and it does wrap around, so you could select stat 1,2,3, 4, 11 and 12.)
Option 2 is a point buy. Str, Dex, Con, Int and Wis all start at 3, Cha starts at 9. You have 58 points plus a D4 roll (I make that roll) to add to the stats. If wanting % str, each point put on Str takes you up 15%. Can only max (take to 18) two stats...

Our group first met up at the Guardtower store (West Columbus, OH, near Hilliard rome road), the 8th of April, this session was merely character generation, as all 4 of the folk are relatively new to 2e, though 1 had the books for 1e with him, he said it's been 20 years since he did it for any length of time, and a 2nd had the phb for 2e, but it's been 10 years since he gamed. He mostly has done pathfinder and shadowrun since then..
All 4 were stoked to make their character, and get into the gaming... They confirmed to game again next Saturday, and then every other Saturday there after..
One made a 1/2 cleric ranger (Kevin S), 1 a dwarf ftr/thief (Whit M), 1 a gnome ill/thief (David R), and one a straight cleric (Matt H), for their primary characters..

A little light on front end combatives, and the player of the gnome, knows the deal with his race (they are being hunted by a freddy kruger like monster in their dreams, an ancient curse like thinggy)..
Of the 2 clerics, one took Shenannie moonbow, and the other, Vorka (a god of archery)...

For back up PC's 2 went ahead and made theirs up, one going with a human fighter (David R), 1 with a lizard man fighter (Kevin S). Via Email Matt H made up his back up, as a L3 ranger (Wife of his cleric).

So for characters we have
Played by David R (Pri)Chomski, a Gnome illusionist-thief, L3 thief-L2 illusionist.
Str 12, Dex 18, Con 16, Int 19 (due to gnome racial bonus), Wis 11 (due to gnome racial penalty), Cha 12. AC 5 (wears +1 cloak of protection and Dex bonus). Spells known - Det magic, Read magic, Phant force, Friends, Change self, Armor, Audible glamor, Spook, Spider climb and Grease. Neutral good. Besides cloak, has a magical scabbard of adjustment (Shrinks or enlarges to fit daggers up to two handed swords, got from an online source iirc).
(Back up) Henri, Human fighter, L2. Peasant hero kit
Str 17, Dex 15, Con 17, Int 9, Wis 12, Cha 10. Spec in spear. Ac 2 (splint mail and shield, with Dex). Lawful good. Wears a ring of warmth.

Played by Matt H; (pri)Khutuktu, the human Cleric of Vorka (god of archery, pathfinders and travelers), L3.
Str 12, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 17, Cha 9. Ac 6 (magical +1 studded leather). Neutral good. Has a magical bag of horse feed (home made item that creates food for horses only)
(B/U) Bolormaa, Wife of Khutuktu, Human Ranger (L3 built as, with my permission, but won't gain any levels till Khutuku has earned L7 under the 2 for 1 leveling HR for back ups, but when played in game, gains XP as normal). Falconeer kit (ranger handbook)
St 14, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 9, Wis 14, Cha 11. AC 0 (Splint and shield, with dex). Neutral good. Carries two neutralize poison potions.

Played by Whit M (Pri) Skai Iron buckle, Dwarf fighter-thief, L2 fi-L3 th.
Str 16, Dex 14, Con 17 (inc racial bonus), Int 14, Wis 9, Cha 13 (inc racial penalty). Lawful neutral. Ac 5 (studded leather and specialty in Single handed fighting style). Wields a +1 longsword.

Played by David S (Pri) Raven Morningstar, Half elf Cleric-ranger (cleric of Sehanine Moonbow). L2 ranger-L2 cleric.
Str 16, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 16, Cha 13. AC 3 (Studded leather +1 and dex). Chaotic good. Possesses a necklace of missiles (two 6hd, two 4hd and four 2hd missiles).
[b(Back up)[/b] Sha'shu the Lizard man fighter, L2.
Str 18/56, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 13, Wis 14, Cha 13 (HE had some real ass lucky rolls for this guy, better than his primary pc!!) Chaotic good. Carries two potions of heroism.

I always, with new groups like to make and put in a DMPC (nearly always a fighter, to round up the #s of characters till we get more players).
DMPC Damien Gould, Human fighter (L2). Myrmidon kit. Specialist in battle axe and weapon/shield fighting style, as well as proficient in medium shield. Neutral good.
Str 18/60, Dex 13, Con 17, Int 9, Wis 10, Cha 11. ( Used my point buy option to make this up while had 2 others check my math). AC 1 (chain, shield, shield prof). Wields +1 battle axe..

Next entry will be the tales of our first session..

OK. First official session done with for my new group.
3 of the players showed up.

We had, Kevin S, playing Raven Morning star his female L2/2 half elf cleric-ranger (cleric of Sehanine moon-bow), with Sha'shu, his l2 lizard man fighter back up PC.
Then came Matt H, playing Khutuktu his L3 human cleric of Vorka, along with Bolormaa, his wife (his back up PC) a L3 ranger joined in. Both based somewhat on Mongols, living and even bringing the kin on horses.. 3 wolves (treated as war dogs and 2 hawks accompanied the ranger (friends of the group, purchased animals NOT animal familiars or the like)..
Third (and last of the 3 players who showed up), was Whit M, playing Skai Iron buckle, his Dwarf fighter/thief (L2/3).

David R has a Gnome illusionist/thief, known as Chomski, with a L2 human fighter, Henri Koulson as back up, but alas he canxed on us late Thurs due to a work overtime requirement.. BUT says he will make it for our next session.

So with 2 players each having 2 pcs, and the third pc with just the one, that gave us at least 5 characters, and the local lord assigned a L2 human fighter (myrmidon kit), Damien Gould, as back up "Till the group has their remaining comrades in arms show up (meaning we get more PCs!)

For about an hour real time, we chatted about carts, wagons, horses, rations and the like as they were thinking of going to the West (unexplored area), towards one of the large inland lakes, approx 48 days from the last known habitat (a trade village just on the SE tip of the Elven forest). After negotiations, purchases and such the party set out, skirting the forest towards the western edge, a trip taking a solid 19 days.

On the night watch of the 8th day of their travels, they hit the first random encounter.. 13 crawling claws. And man was the combat, slapstick. Even with the dogs biting, swords flailing around and arrows being launched, it took them quite a while to whittle the hands down to 0.. And with some real bad damage rolls, Raven morning star and Gould both got brought close to being ko'ed, while Sha'shu asking after the battle, "So do these things taste any good!

A while later (day 14), they had a midday encounter with a 5 pack of hell hounds. And man was the battle fought smartly by the party. Both Bolormaa and Khutuktu rode off on their light war horses from the group, drawing two of the damnable beasties with them, and both fought great firing from horseback (even with the rate of fire halved and the -2 penalty to hit from speed and -2 from range. The other 3 went straight for the group. Damien jumped off his riding horse and charged out about 20 meters to form a 'point shield guard' of sorts, to protect Khutuktu and his wife's two kids (I <expletive deleted> you not, he played up the whole mongol way of dragging the kids with ya, EVEN on adventures!!).. The trio of wolves formed a sort of hemisphere around the cart, while Raven and the lizard man both took turns plinking arrows towards the 2 that were tag teaming Damien, thinking that if they combined on the one they could take him out quickly, and then work on the one that was coming towards them...
However, the third that went into the group eventually got into Raven's face, and went "BURP!.. And out came the hell hound's flame breath (17hp).. His poor horse (10hp) went right down, and he also took damage, going into the negatives.. Luckily for him, i had completely forgotten he was wearing a necklace of missiles (currently containing 2 six hd, 2 four hd and 4 two hd fireballs on, as that would have made one BIGGA boom!!)... That left Sha'shu and Skai having to scramble to protect the cart AND deal with that one.. Luckily, the good AC of Damien kept him in the fight for long enough for those two to drop theirs.. :viking:

While this was going on, the husband and wife team had managed to kill one of the 2 that chased them, but the other finally grew tired of it (made an int check for it to realize "HEY i ain't gonna catch these peeps, better go help my pack mates").. But it would be 2 rounds at full move before it was able to get into any battle range.. Pity for him, he got a # of arrows up the butt and died before making it there.. :knight:

After getting burped on twice (and making his save with a nat 18 and nat 20), the gang were cheering for Damien, after he finally dropped one of his two hounds, and since Sha'shu had ran over, they tag teamed the final one till it tried to flee, but got some arrows in the side from Skai for his trouble..

Unfortunately in the intervening time, Raven's horse had expired, and he was close to joining him (now at -8 with bleeding out). But luckily some well placed healing spells halted that.. However, even with a successful system shock roll (at -5% per -hp he went) he EASILY made his check to halve the days of bed rest he would be needed. AND since he got taken down, the spells HE had were wiped from memory (Dam that going under!)
Note i use a house rule where when you drop into the negatives, you can go to -10, OR IF A WARRIOR (inc multiclass) negative your con before dying. Each point you went negative is 1 day of bed rest required before you become combat effective, even if magical healing's used, up to a max of 7 days. Once back up to positive hp, you can roll a System shock roll at -5% per -1 you went down (so someone at -5 would be at -25% to his sys roll). A cure Moderate wounds spell can remove 1 day of bed rest requirement PER casting, a Cure serious wound can remove 2 days, a cure crit can remove 3 days, but NO matter how much healing you get you will always need a minimum of 1 day bed rest.. PERIOD

Sha'shu stayed with the cart, to help keep watch over the almost comatose Raven, and watch the kids (With the war dogs assisting), while everyone else trotted off almost a full day's distance before locating hounds lair.. And after a brief skirmish with the 2 cubs (9 and 12hp), they looted the lair of some good coin (over 400 gold and 800 electrum but no magic, gems or artwork). They also investigated the corpses in the lair (which is where the coins were at), and noticed cause of eating up and decomposition of the bodies from being there so long, identification of what race/species they were was hard, but at least 2 looked like possible fellow Lizard men, and another was almost human-ish, but due to no head left, they couldn't be too sure.. Another 2 surprised them, as they were very small, too small even for a Halfling or gnome.. But not wide enough for either of those races as well...

After getting back to Sha'shu and the horses/cart, they continued their trek, and finally got to the western edge without any other encounters (not even an Elf patrol bugged them, rolled a LOT of 5s and 6s for Encounter possibilities, so none came)..

Then on the night of the 4th day out FROM the forest's western edge, they hit trouble.. A night watch with Damien and Skai being up, got rumbled by a quartet of Kephrinn, and though the group kinda remembered some wording on them from the briefing they got, their notes (mental and scribbled) were incomplete.. After being woken up, Khutuktu and the wife decided to try and do to these like they did with the hell hounds and rather than donning armor, tried to get on the horses to ride away to maybe lure one of the skeletal beasties away. However these beasts being rather smart (Int being 12-13) they were not fooled by the attempted diversion.

The fight was brutal, with Sha'shu realizing "I ain't got a magical weapon, i can't do anything", while Khutuktu kept missing well over 60% of his shots with his magical bow. Raven tried a turn, but failed miserably (rolled a nat 2), but at least kept using Command to make 1 of them flee, then have to spend a round coming back in.. So the group for 4 rounds, in essence only fought 3.. The star of that battle though went to Damien, who took 3 down himself (and almost paid the price with the explosion in his face severely damaging him each time).. Bolormaa, even had to spend a few rounds overbearing one of the beasts, and paid dearly (due to the free strike to fend her off, wounding her very badly). BUT at least the 3 wolves had fun at least Trying to gnaw on the leg bones of them (as only 2hd dogs they couldn't actually hurt them, but they at least gave it some penalties to his str roll to resist being born to the ground).
When the pack was down to 1 remaining, Even Sha'shu tried to get involved with overbearing, but eventually had to settle for braving it with borrowing Damien's magical axe (his only magic item) and got right in its face. He even tried using his tail at one time on the thing but that proved fruitless.
Though 3 were brought to the very low single digits, K's wife was unlucky and was actually brought into the negatives (-7) after the one she was wrestling down got back up, just to die from a crit from one of the arrows in his face. Unfortunately it was the explosion that did her in...

The one that Raven kept commanding to run away, was almost taken out from a 4hd fireball from his necklace of missiles, but he survived long enough to get into it with Skai (the only one really not that damaged). BUT a failed tumbling roll, meant he took a face of flaming bone fragments when he landed a killing blow...

Finally realizing that the road might not be the right place for the kids, Bolormaa spoke to her hubby, and the group as a whole said "yea, we need to go back to at least the forest, if not the village and drop the kids off.." And since this was a good stopping spot, (and hopefully with us going to now every Other week, it gives us time to get 1-2 additional players, and David R will be back, She can fade back to her status as back up (keeping watch on the kids), while the rest goes back out...

All in all they were actually LOVING how things went down. Heck Matt H and Whit both said "THIS Is what i remember loving about the older editions.. How grinding they can be, and how they make you Think sometimes before acting.. Plus it doesn't hurt to have the session end in a bang (referencing the fireball going off)"!...

I plan on having Damien stick around for 2-3 more months as a full party member (as assigned) assuming the group DOES get up to 5-6 players, and if someone THEN wishes to take him on as a henchmen, he is already established and known about by the party.

Re: Realms of Kervasis Kaloom, Campaign Journal.

Postby garhkal » Tue May 09, 2017 2:41 pm

OK. So we had our 3rd session with the new Guard tower group. Whit M, David R, Kevin S all showed up from last time, though Matt H unfortunately couldn't make it (Texted early in the morn he had a stomach bug), but we gained a new player, Alex H. Alex made a straight High elf mage. So with Kevin and Whit both keeping their back ups in game (since we lost the two of Matt), And the NPC fighter (Damien) sticking around (once Matt and the other new guy who will be joining on the 13th May, our next session date) shows up, i will push Damien to the side lines..

played by Alex H (pri) Falondiel, Elven Mage, L3. Lawful good (player decided against taking a kit for now but might for his back up, who he's thinking of making an elf fighter-mage).
Str 14, Dex 16 (inc racial bonus), Con 12 (inc racial penalty), Int 16, Wis 10, Cha 14. Started out with the quarterstaff, but me and he are talking about him either switching it out to either the Hand crossbow (which i allow mages to use but he couldn't afford unless he wants to sell of his magical +1 staff i gave him) OR go with ninja stars (Elf throwing blades). Hopefully he will decide by this Sat (our next game day)... AC 5 (bracers Defense ac7 + dex).

So in attendance (cha wise) was Raven Morning-star, the Cleric-ranger of Sehnanie Moonbow, the Lizard-man fighter, Sha'shu. Chomski the Gnome Illusionist-thief, Skai Iron buckle the Dwarf Fighter-thief, and Damien the human fighter DMNPC. Skai's back up fighter, Henri Koulson will make an appearance when they get back to a village.

We left the party battered and bruised after the night time run in with the Kephrinn. The party noticed that Bolormaa and her husband, Khutuktu had scarpered, most likely to catch up to the horse they kept their kids attached too, or had decided to get an early start in running back to town, though with her needing some major bed rest, they said a prayer to the gods that the pair would make it back unscathed.. (This is how i explained the absence of the player and his characters)

Either way, they got startled when they heard a commotion from the back of the cart, and found the tied up Gnome (its how i made him be with the party!!).. OOC while this was going on, Alex was finishing off making his Elf mage, so we had a few min to go before he was able to get into the group.

The party spent the better part of the rest of the night up, and restless while discussing what to do, go home, restock, see if they can gain a new fighter or what.. eventually deciding to at least go back to that village.
The following day they rumbled onto an Orc patrol, heading in a somewhat east, by north east direction (if they kept on that course the patrol would have eventually made it to the elven forest)..
Neither side appeared surprised to see one another (though the lizard man Sha'shu Was surprised), the orcs on their light war horses charged in, while the party closed ranks..
Chomski, the conniving illusionist had better ideas though, and popped off a phantasmal force spell of a hedge of thorns growing out of the ground fast, and encircling the party. However the enemy were split into a quartet of swordsmen (rushing in) a quartet of archers (composite short bows) and the patrol leader (specialist in the longbow).. He was the only one not fooled, so the archers just slowed up so they had no RoF penalties and stuck just inside medium range for their bows. However, the sword-orcs started circling, wondering "what hooman devil magic is this".

The orc archers took pot shots, one targeting Skai the dwarf, one Sha-shu, one Damien and one Raven. Though only one got hit, for a paltry scratch (2hp dam), they were all shocked, when they saw the orc patrol leader let loose an arrow from his bow, as BAM Skai took a nasty blow from it  . After a few more round with the party trading arrow fire, all of the sword-orcs decided to try and leap over (like one of those equestrian events), though only 1 of the 4 made it, the other horses balking at going in. However by now, Skai had killed one of the orc archers, along with Raven taking down a 2nd.
Several rounds later, both Damien and Sha'shu had taken out the orc that entered the circle.. 3 orcs down and not one pc down. MORALE roll called for, but 07 rolled so their morale held..

4 total rounds after, both other archers and the patrol leader's morale broke though after seeing the last 3 sword-orc's taken down, and still none of the pesky hoomans looked that badly off (though Skai was down to under 4hp, and Raven's mule had been stung by a few arrows too)..
While the orcs fled, one of the 2 remaining orc archers got killed.. BUT damn it, the leader left..
Since this was a 'scheduled encounter, with the first of 3 patrols from a nearby orc warband, the escape of the leader here (and below, can come back to haunt them, as valuable intelligence on party make up and tactics has been learned by the orcs!!

The party collected up the loot (arms and horses) that they could, and continued on.

That night, their camp was entered by an Elf patrol (3 npcs and Alex's finished character, the Mage Falondiel. They had mentioned their owl aerial scout had noticed some humans and a lizard man engaged in combat a # of hours ago and had come to see if any assistance was needed.. After some pleasantries, the elves agreed to help finish escorting the party back to the Forest's edge, but would continue their patrols after that. However, Falondiel had decided he would stick with this motley crew and see what trouble he can get up to (how the player worded it!)

A few days on the trail back to the village, they had rumbled onto a pair of adult owlbears lunching down on some dead deer, the party though, wisely avoided them.

However their 5th night's rest on route back to the village was not so lucky. As a pack of 11 of those crawling claws entered the camp and not even the horses and mules were spared getting clawed..
Skai's starting to feel like he might be cursed as just like their last time encountering them, he got some on him while he was sleeping (Player rolled a nat 20 to wake up, so stayed snoring)..
However, though 5 of the claws had split off to go tackle the horses/mule (and pony for Chomski), the new firepower brought by Falondiel, in the casting of a Flaming sphere, made short work of any that came near him or the horses.. But unfortunately not before 2 had been clawed into deeply.. :( :scared:

Sha'shu, just like before, took to killing them with a passion, making good use of his harpoon.

after the battle, raven dispatched his healing, spreading it to Damien, Skai and the horses who got the most mauling... Damien is thinking he needs some armor other than his chain mail that he could sleep in, as getting clawed while unarmored, by these beasties hurts!

Finally they made it into the village (heretofore now known as Podinkpill (one of the players wanted to call it Podunkville, but due to some pringles in his mouth it came out as Podinkpill instead and we all had a laugh.. So Podinkpill it is!.. :pop:

After a few nights rest and restocking, they were joined by a human peasant warrior, known as Henri Koulson, hoping to make a name for himself and some money so he could replace his lost family's farm (damn orc raids up north!)..

During the negotiations (they had sold off 3 of the 4 bows they had acquired, some of the swords, and even some of the arrows, but didn't say what they were doing with the horses), Chomski who did the negotiation for food (they brought a lot of rations and a 2nd mule to help pull the cart with all this on, spending 700gp!!), cast Friends on himself, to enhance his chattiness.. However, even offering to let the store owner 'get in on the ground floor of the vast western expanse that the group hopes to tame, he only got a paltry 3% discount (rolled poorly as hell on his NPC reaction roll but that was slightly modified by his good RP)...

And off they went. Rumbling into a pack of 9 stirges the 12th day of 19 back to where they left the forest's edge. Both Skai and Raven became stuck with these buggers on them but it was Sha'shu who had it worse.. He took an arrow in the back in addition to the blood sucking from the front!.. :archer:

After the party had finished off with the night time incursion with them, they made it off back to find those pesky orcs..

6 days this time, out from the forest's edge, they rumbled into a 2nd patrol (another batch of 4 archers, 4 long bow/broad sword users, and another longbow spec patrol leader)..
This time Chomski had set the hedge illusion to be thicker hoping it would prevent any jumpers this time. However, both Henri and Damien blew through the illusion, rushing to engage a group of 2 of the sword wielding orcs after they dismounted and were in process of setting up to use their larger and nastier longbows (Sheaf arrows ain't no joke!)..
A few rounds later, the battle was almost over after Chomski had popped off a well placed Spook, causing the Orc's patrol leader to flee in terror (took him 8 bloody rounds to save but i had a poor morale roll for him after, and he decided to not go back.. The other archers also fled, but the 4 sword-orcs died.. However, during the battle, Raven was brought into the negatives (just -4 from bleeding after being critted by the leader's long bow before he was spooked off!)..

We saw this as a good place to end it for the night... The party still 7 strong (well 4 pcs, 2 back ups and the npc), will continue, hoping to eventually run into the main orc group, so they can do some looting... And we hope that Matt is healthy for next time (the 13th), and i have word of another new player who couldn't make it for this week, but will be there for the 13th, so that will bring us up to 6 players (YAY).. When they get here, the 2 back ups (Sha'shu, Henri) and the NPC will retreat back to the rear, to make a camp site 1 day off the edge of the Elf forest.. To in essence make a base camp...

Well, got word one of the 4 regulars (matt H) had to canx, his wife's in the hospital (didn't ask what for, but understand), but that other newbie says he's down to play!!, so i think if nothing else, i will have the 3 back ups (Sha'shu, Balmoraa and Henri) fade into the back round, but i will keep Damien (the DMNPC assigned) in the group for now...

I am looking forward to this weekend's game!

Ok, so Zach and his friend are wanting to both try and make up some human barbarian kit fighters... I've got a perfect spot planned to input them!

OK so we concluded our 4th session. On the Bad news front, 3 of our regulars (Matt H, David R and Whitt M) had to cancel for various reasons (David R cancelled the morning of, was real sick as in tossing up every 10 min.. so i can easily understand missing a game for that, while Whitt had to travel up to Cleveland for something to do with his mom. Didn't get a reason from Matt H, but the word i am getting from others on the Meet-up site, is that he usually sticks with a group for 2-3 sessions to get it Set up, and it gets a steady to 6 player base, then he 'backs off'. Since we had the 4, plus Alex and hopefully 2 others showing up, i guess we hit that 'pull back marker', but i am confirming that with him.. If it IS the case, i will retire out his two characters permanently.)

BUT on the good front, Zach showed up (though the friend he thought he might be able to bring couldn't make it due to work), and another new player, a Ross C showed up (he was languishing on the sidelines, looking for his 3.5 table, which it appears never showed up, so he happily jumped into our table! And he says he will stick WITH us if we are regularly every other week gaming..!! So when David R and Whitt M get back, that gives us a solid 6 player base..

So showing up to play (starting out at least) were Raven Morningstar (Kevin's primary, the cleric-ranger), with Sha'shu the Lizard-man fighter (his back up pc), Damien (the DMNPC), Falondiel (the elf mage of Adam). We started gaming while the group discussed whether to continue hunting for the orcs, or back off back to civilization for now. BUT they decided to keep on the road for a few more days, at the minimum, till either we figured out what was up with the orcs, or something else cropped up..
While this was going on, Zachary made up a Human Fighter (barbarian kit), and Ross C made up a Human Priest of Sarajen (the good/neutral barbarian god). They decided near the end of our gaming session, that they would be younger/elder brother, and younger brother (the priest), due to his scrawniness was being sent out in to the wilds as a punishment for something to do with his clan (we are working on the backstory on why off line). Elder bro (the fighter) tolerates him cause he still strives to serve the clan and Sarajen with his spells.. However, while out from their tribe's mobile encampment (think mongols) those two got captured by a 13 man strong barbarian group from a rival god (AND clan), who hates followers of Sarajen (its one of the 3 new gods of evil focused barbarians i have created, One worshiped by the barbarians of some of the southern islands (they occasionally raid into the midlands of Kalomm, but not much else unless they suspect a Sarajen tribe's nearby)..

Played by Ross (Pri). Chesure, Clan of the Elk, Human Cleric (l3) of Sarajen. Str 14, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 13, Wis 16, Cha 12. Wears +1 hide, and has a scroll protection from lightning for his 2 magical items.
Played by Zak (pri) Serngrot, Clan of the Elk, Human Barbarian (fighter, L3). Str 16, Dex 13, Con 17, Int 13, Wis 12, Cha 10. Wears banded mail, Prof in medium shield, Spec in bastard sword (changed from his long sword, he was initially going for since barbarians NEED either the battle axe or bastard sword starting out, and it has the same stats in game as a long sword when used one handed).. Possesses a +1 bastard sword (+2 vs magic using creatures), and carries a potion of Extra healing..

So the 4 man group followed the Orc trail for 3 days before losing it, but near the night time when they selected a camp site, two of the group heard the sounds of war drums on the wind from the south.
After a night of rest (and some last min healing) the party decided to have a quick chat, investigate the new sounds of war drums or continue trying to track the orcs. To a man (Damien included) they decided to go for the new threat..
Another day's march southward and they passed the remnants of a camp site. Another day, and they saw the light of a campsite off in the distance..
They predicted they might meet up the following mid day, if they pushed it a little faster... So Raven popped off some Remove Fatigue spells on everyone. When the group got close, they left the wagon and cart back along with the horses and all approached to within eye site of the enemy, and saw 6 barbarians (all human) on horseback, in a flanking pose, 6 more in a bunch carrying 2 other humans tied off on poles (the 2 newbie pcs of Zak and Ross), and a stronger 'meaner' looking barbarian in sort of a middle "I am the leader" spot...

After Falondiel reported back with what they saw, they proceeded to plan out their attack. After discussions, Falondiel would ride ahead of the barbarians, wait on the opposite side of a hill, to use his Wall of Fog spell in the middle of the 'vale between the 2 hills', then wait while standing inside of it to see what the enemy does. IF he thinks he can get away with it, then he would cast his last spell of the day sleep to try and get the six pole-man taken out of action.. The party's plan in place, we got the surprise round off, the sleep work like a charm and dropped all 6 barbarians (with NO HD left on it to affect any of the 2 tied up PCs). The 6 flankers held up, and spread out worried what was going on. While the barbarian leader stopped and shouted for the flankers to spot who/where the enemy was.. So 2 looked forward, 2 looked to each side and the last two looked to the rear, spotting the rest of our party (no surprises on either side..)

Initiative was engaged, and Damien was shooting the 2 flankers on the right that were riding in our direction, Raven, took the 2 on the left (who did the same), while Sha'shu charged directly in to take on the leader, Mano-e-Mano. BUT soon came to regret it.... The last 2 flankers went cautiously towards the mist wall, as they saw a shadow of what was Falondiel, right after he cast his sleep..

After avoiding the spear thrusts of those 2 riders, Falondiel resorted to using his hand crossbow. Scored a nasty wound on one of the barbarians (all 1hd foes, 3hp the lowest, 5hp the highest, i rolled SUCKY for most of these buggers).. My arrow fire along with Raven's kept missing the onrushing barbarians to us. And Sha'shu found out that high str foes are a pain to face! He should know, he's used HIS great strength on several occasions to put enemies down, sometimes in one blow!. 3 Smacks, one being a max damage blow took Sha'shu into the negatives..
Then the fun was on.
In the 3rd round, Falondiel had left the protection of the fog banks and had ran into the sleeping barbarian's midst, to start trying to free the two prisoners they had. While this was going on, the leader had engaged Raven. And two rounds later. Raven was next to fall, then Damien.. Only 1 of the barbarians had been killed by that time.. And it was that barbarian leader (a 4th level warrior) who did us all in!... By this time both the 2 New players had been freed and had equipped themselves with the closest weaponry (spears! ) and started fighting.. A lucky thought from Chesure, put a darkness ball right on the leader's eyes, but unfortunately for him (since they were in melee at the time) even darkness does not stop a NAT 20, from cleaving into you! Another blow later and he went out cold (Exactly at 0hp).
2 more rounds later, and Serngrot shared the same fate... :sucks: :sucks: :sucks:

So Falondiel ran away, the barbarians seeing the fleeing skinny elf as nothing even worth their effort to go after.. They had a Lizard man, and two more humans to add to their prisoner group (to sacrifice to their evil god in just over a week time).

Thinking things over, since i HAD planned for (in 2 more days if they had kept to their normal schedule) a 4 pack of Kephrinn (those flaming skeletons who go boom when they are killed), rumbled INTO the camp of the barbarians. Several were killed, but the rest fled, leaving the prisoners tied up, the horses to be taken. For what Falondiel, was unsure.. BUT he didn't question the blessing they had been given..

After freeing everyone, they headed off to get at least SOME healing.. Then some more healing, and more on top of that (as both Sha'shu and Damien needed bed rest more so than Raven did)..

After 3 total days, guess what. That same group of 4 Kephrinn rumbled into the PARTY's camp. The great strength (and sword!) of Serngrot, along with the axe of Damien got 3 of the killed, while Raven used his Command to keep the last running off, till he was out of spells.. Then he got into the thick of it.. 3 pcs were on that last one, till it finally died.. Pity the blast sent Raven once again into the negatives, And was it not for a well timed Aid to both Damien and Serngrot, would have done the same to both of them!.. They tracked the Kephrinn back to their lair (4 hrs trip) and looted it of what coins and stuff they could get their hungry mitts on..

After resting up again, the group decided to continue after the barbarians, wanting revenge.. 2 more days after raven came too, they had one more night encounter with 11 of those crawling claws.. And man did the player laugh watching Whitt describe how Sha'shu went to town on them (he killed 5 on his bloody own!). :cook: :bash: :bash:
During this battle, Chesure had stopped using his long-spear (man are those nasty, 2d6/3d6 damage?!?!!?), and had switched to using Produce flame.. scorching one and almost killing it with the first strike, but missing all the others (and luckily avoiding hitting anyone else to the spell using grenade like missile chart on a miss).

After one more night of rest, the party were back off and made it up to the Barbarians, and saw their camp. That group of 7 (plus the leader) that fled from when the Kephrinn rumbled into THEM, were bolstered up 2 more.. Whitt, Alex and Zak discussed whether to just walk in and issue a challenge from either Serngrot, or even Chesure.. Maybe as a fellow barbarian, they figured, he would honor the challenge, but Ross did mention "Well if they hate our god, wouldn't that potentially mean that they hate HIS way of honorable challenges..
By now Whitt had seen "HEY Sha'shu has a pair of heroism potions.. Maybe i could pop one to Serngrot and buff him up REAL nice for said challenge..

So it was ON!! :orc:

While the rest of us approached openly, Falondiel was off to the side, once again under the cover of Invisibility.
As Serngrot issued his challenge, the leader DID come right into his face, but the 3 other guards also came in.. So much for honor (BUT what do you expect from CE barbarians!) :viking:
After everyone else got engaged, Falondiel did it again, and took 6 out who were still back in camp, sleeping (though one WAS woken up by the leader before he engaged the party..
Even with his Heroism boost, Serngrot took his sweet time fighting the leader (several misses in a row), but eventually after Damien and Sha'shu had killed the 3 other barbarians, we gang piled on the leader killing him eventually. While this was going on, Falondiel had tied up 5 of the 6 sleeping barbarians (Even though the player did mention he wanted his elf mage to be LG, he was dead certain he said CG.. So that way he could kill sleeping foes without worry). BUT due to the priest of Sarajen AND the other 2 NGs in the party, just went for tying them up..

However, a hungry Lizard-man took the worry of that away from Falondiel...

After interrogating the last one we left alive, (and while some of us looted the barbarians), we found out that they had a 'sacrifice to their goddess to make in a week, which is why they had captured the two barbarians earlier, as she LOVES sacrifices of worshipers of Sarajen..
So we plotted that if we were to use a mix of Remove Fatigue And Lighten load we could force march the 7 day trek towards the coast to try and HIT the barbarians ship (and remainder of their clan that came along) right when they were doing said ritual..

OOC I LOVE it, when a fluff piece/unscripted Random encounter gets turned into a major plot-line BY WHAT the party does.. Don't you! :D :D

After healing up, we set off again. However 3 days INTO our trek (14 days of time passed so far this game session) we rumbled into the last encounter i had set.. A quartet of those Trapper Scorpions. Two i had wrote out as being "Emaciated (low HP), while the other 2 were healthy. So the 2 real hungry ones, targeted HORSES first, and as soon as they got a kill, they tried dragging the bodies off..

The first horse to get killed, was the one under Falondiel (he had one of the 2 Emaciated, Serngrot the other, while Me and Chesure had the 2 healthy ones). Then came mine. THEN Chesure's and lastly Serngrot's. 4 dead horses. Though we did kill 3 of the beasts, while the last had fled back into its pit dragging a dead horse to lunch on..
Chesure dived in first, missing the beast but as he described his dive, he literally JUMPED in.. Luckily his Dex check succeeded so he didn't go face first onto the corpse of the dead horses.
Serngrot and Sha'shu were NOT so fortunate though. BOTH missed wildly with their two hit rolls, and a Nat 20 for Sha'shu and a nat 19 for Serngrot on their Dex checks saw them end up face to face with the scorpion.. However the very next round a spear thrust from Chesure killed it..
They got some more nice loot..

This is where we ended the session, so the party can figure out "What do we do now, with 4 dead mounts!!" :sucks:

Eat the mounts as food?

Sounds like a fun campaign! I hope everyone manages to stay more regular as far as attendance, but so far it looks good. I love the encounters with crawling claws! Yes, those always seem to turn almost slapstick. If I want to infuriate players, just five me some insects, some gremlins, or some crawling claws! Works every time!

This sounds like fun campaign, and from the comments the players are making ("THIS Is what i remember loving about the older editions.. How grinding they can be, and how they make you Think sometimes before acting.. Plus it doesn't hurt to have the session end in a bang (referencing the fireball going off)"!), I think it's gonna be a huge success!
