Re: Changing odd rules

That's a better way to put it! Looking for more examples like that.

Changing odd rules

What rules have you found so odd that you felt compelled to change them? I don't mean things you don't like, I mean things that make no sense from a rules standpoint. My example... Cloakers have several types of sonic moan attacks. The MM claims the effects of these moans can be negated using a neut...

Glad you remember it too! I've got a decade on both you and Garhkal, and it was making me worry that I was imagining it!

Re: When the player's not there..

Might have been the thread you referenced, because I clicked back on it but didn't re-read it all. Just a weird deja-vu when I saw this one. That's happened on a few other topics now and then.

Re: When the player's not there..

This has always been an issue. But I could swear we had this exact conversation in a different thread (not the one you linked to). Or am I thinking of something else? Do you have the character of said player get ran by another player (with the missing player's consent ahead of time)? I prefer this m...

Re: How do YOU Double damage

Garhkal wrote: If the weapon itself (like broad swords/morning stars) does d6+1/d4+1, do you double the +? Yes, but it would look like this - assuming a weapon's base damage is 1d6+1 (say, a spetum). Let's say it's a spetum +2 (magic weapon). Let's assume the wielder has a STR 17, giving him a +1 da...

Re: How do YOU Double damage

BTB you double/triple/etc only the rolled damage, then add in any magic/STR or other bonuses. So BTB, a thief at 8th level with a +2 shortsword and a STR 17 (+1 dam) who does a successful backstab (x3 damage) would roll his d6. Say he rolls a 4. He triples that to 12, then adds the +2 for the magic ...

Re: Think of the poor PCs!

I have a tendency, in real life, to back people into a corner on these things and not let them blow off the facts. I don't let them obfuscate, evade or avoid. I keep a sharp point on the points made. I'm also one of those people who, if I'm "debating" someone on the other side and they try...

Precisely which parts of the adventure do you play?

Sounds like an odd question. What I'm asking is this... Let's say you're running an adventure. Doesn't matter if it's published or home-brew. I assume most people play out any introduction necessary, the adventure set up, etc. And clearly everyone plays the actual adventure. But how many people play...

Re: Think of the poor PCs!

I'm trying to arrange an interview on FOX news to talk about school shootings when these little snot nosed punks are on talking about banning guns, because I want to hit them with the fact that over 4,000 teens die every year from texting while driving, and so I want to ban their cell phones! :twist...

I don't know...I've killed plenty of PCs with d6s and d8s as well. Maybe we should ban ALL DICE!

Re: Crushing blow saves??

I go with the 1E DMG and require an item save vs. crushing blow on each hit from a giant. Not so much orges, because they don't seem tall that massive (9'-10' tall). I like that rule because it makes giants particularly dangerous and they're one of my favorite monsters (and they make the top ten lis...

Re: Messing up a spell, do you change it later?

I would say that if everyone is happy with it and are used to how it is, why change it? It still stays balanced. For example, if you got rid of the saving throw for curse (reverse bless ), that would make it a bit more effective against enemies...but it would also make it more effective when used ag...

Re: When D&D lost its soul

It was a pretty big issue back then. At TLG, at DF, etc. How could it not be a big issue, after all? People thought they were getting the Holy Grail of campaign settings - the actual Greyhawk campaign played by the creator(s) of the game. It was one of the most egregious cases of fraud I've ever see...

Re: When D&D lost its soul

If Gygax had been honest and said look, we're not printing up the original Greyhawk stuff, but this will be inspired by ideas I had for that campaign, that would have been honest. And people would probably have bought it anyway. But to lie to the faces of the people who made him rich in the first pl...
